2009 Summit Program Cover

More than 100 elected officials, citizens and consultants turned out for the Lake-Sumter Metropolitan Planning Organization’s (MPO) Regional Transportation Summit.

The theme of the 2009 Summit was "How to Build a Cost Feasible Transportation Plan."

The morning session was kicked off by T.J. Fish, Executive Director of the MPO who provided a Summit Overview and talked about the theme of How to Build a Cost Feasible Transportation Plan.

The keynote address was given by Doug Callaway, President of Floridians for Better Transportation (FBT). Nationally recognized for his understanding of effective government relations techniques Doug addressed the crowd and spoke of funding opportunity.  Doug shared FBT as a business and transportation association is a strong advocate for protecting existing transportation revenues so vital for helping to improve our ailing economy and creating jobs. FBT is a proponent of finding additional new dollars to do transportation projects today at a fraction of their original price.

Other presenters were Bud Beucher, member of Lake County Transportation Alternative Funding Task Force; Bradley Arnold, Sumter County Administrator; George Lovett, Director Transportation Development,  District Five; and consultants, Teresa Jacobs, Coordinator, Program Services at The Florida Institute of Government at the University of Central Florida; and Bob Wallace, P.E., AICP,  Vice President at Tindale-Oliver & Associates, Inc.

In the afternoon break-out session the audience was divided into (4) four groups.  Each break-out group was tasked to develop strategies to develop and fund a successful multi-modal transportation system as we move nearer to the development and implementation of the MPO’s 2035 Transportation Plan, a vision to lead our region away from congested highways and provide options for the movement of people and goods.
