US 27

US 27, from Interstate 4 to the Florida Turnpike is part of the Florida Intrastate Highway System (FIHS) and Strategic Intermodal System (SIS). FIHS/SIS roadways have been designated by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) because of their importance in providing mobility for people and goods. For this reason, and due to increased growth and traffic levels in the area, US 27 in South Lake County has been planned to be widened to six lanes. Two segments, from SR 520 (US 192) to Boggy Marsh Road, and from SR 50 to CR 561, have been programmed for construction and are currently underway.

The segments of US 27, from Boggy Marsh Road to SR 50, are currently under design and moving into right-of-way (ROW) acquisition. Construction dollars will be allocated to these segments of US 27 as soon as they become available.

While located outside our jurisdiction, it is important to monitor roadway projects in neighboring communities that may have an impact in the Lake~Sumter region. A Project Development and Environmental (PD&E) Study is currently underway for the section of US 27, from Interstate 4 to SR 530 (US 192), at the Lake County Line. This study is being performed by FDOT, District One, in coordination with the Polk County Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) to ease the transition of urbanization and growth in the area by improving and maintaining safe and efficient transportation measures. The study will determine all feasible alternatives for adding lanes, adding paved shoulders, replacing a substandard bridge, and straightening non-standard curve geometry. Additional safety improvements will also be studied.
