Each of the outgoing Board members received a commemorative plaque for their service to the regional transportation planning agency at the Oct. 25 meeting of the Board.

“Looking at transportation needs from a regional perspective is a beneficial process as it requires the cooperative effort of all local governments,” Hanson said.

Pool added, “We, as cities in Lake and Sumter counties, along with the cooperation of the Metropolitan Planning Organization, are working collaboratively for our future transportation needs, helping us to move forward. The regional approach for transportation is of the utmost importance for the future of our communities, which makes all the difference.”

Maraio added, “During my two years of service on the Board, I received a great knowledge of transportation issues and needs in the area. The key to moving forward is developing creative solutions to get much needed transportation funding. That is clearly the biggest challenge for the MPO.”

MPO Board Chairman and Mount Dora Mayor James Yatsuk acknowledged the outgoing Board members service to the MPO since its inception. All three Board members were in attendance of the first MPO Board meeting on Feb. 25, 2004.

The Lake-Sumter MPO Board consists of 20 board members (14 voting and six non-voting) representing the communities of the Lake-Sumter region. Each member government appoints an elected official to the MPO Board, along with an alternate representative.

The apportionment of membership on the Lake-Sumter MPO Board includes one voting representative from each of the seven most populated cities in Lake County, including Clermont, Eustis, Lady Lake, Leesburg, Minneola, Mount Dora and Tavares. In addition, the five members of the Lake County Board of County Commissioners and the one designated county commissioner from the Sumter County Board of County Commissioners are each voting members. The seven least populated cities of Lake County share one at-large vote that rotates alphabetically each year.
