Thomas W. Burke, P.E., AICP
Currently serving as Senior Transportation Planner for the Lake~Sumter Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), Tom is licensed by the Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE) and certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP). He is a member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, Florida Planning and Zoning Association (FPZA), and is especially active with the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association (FAPA). Tom’s current duties include, but are not limited to, providing travel demand modeling, development review, and transportation concurrency support to the MPO member governments, guiding long range transportation planning for the MPO area, and developing and updating standard required MPO documentation, such as the Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP) and Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).
Born in Lynn, Massachusetts and raised in nearby Swampscott, on Boston’s Northshore, Tom completed his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering at Northeastern University, in downtown Boston. He then obtained his Masters Degree in Civil Engineering, with a strong focus on Transportation Systems, from Purdue University, in West Lafayette, Indiana. Since leaving Purdue, Tom has worked for State and local government, as well as private consulting firms.
Tom met his wife, Astrid, in 2002 while working for an Orlando consulting firm. They were married in Mount Dora in 2004. Astrid recently completed her Juris Doctorate degree in law from Florida A&M University in Orlando and passed the Florida Bar exam in 2006. She is currently enrolled at the University of Florida, studying tax law. Astrid and Tom currently reside in the City of Fruitland Park.
