MPO officials celebrate opening of Clermont Express
CLERMONT — Officials from the Lake-Sumter Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), the South Lake Chamber of Commerce and LYNX celebrated the grand opening of the Clermont Express route Monday morning at the Clermont Park & Ride lot, located a half mile south on the U.S. Highway 27 from the State Road 50 intersection.
Lake County recently contracted with LYNX, Central Florida’s regional transportation authority, to provide bus services in Clermont and the Four Corners community. The Clermont Express route runs from the Park & Ride lot to LYNX’s Central Station in downtown Orlando. The service operates Monday through Friday, every half hour from 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. and again every afternoon from downtown Orlando back to Clermont from 4 to 6 p.m.
LYNX Chief of Staff Edward Johnson (left) and Clermont Commissioner Keith Mullins cut the ribbon for the new Clermont Express.
“LYNX has broken ridership records in 23 of the last 24 years and there is no doubt that the Clermont Express and expansion of service in the Four Corners area of Lake County are going to help us push that streak another year down the road,” said Edward Johnson, Chief of Staff for LYNX. “But the real benefit of this arrangement for LYNX is developing a working relationship with the leaders of Lake County.
“We hope the success of the Clermont Express inspires more discussion on continuing to expand service to meet the transportation needs of Lake County,” he added.
Minneola Mayor David Yeager, who is also Chairman of the Lake-Sumter MPO said the new express route “is tremendous. This is a start and I hope we continue to offer these services in Lake County, and hopefully in the future, LYNX will be available in our [Minneola] downtown.”
Lake County currently contracts with LYNX to provide a Clermont Express (Link 204) to downtown Orlando and a bus route (Link 55) in the Four Corners community that extends along U.S. Highway 192. For more information about either of these routes, call 407-841-LYNX or log on to www.golynx.com.
